Spanish? #@&^?
Q. My parents are making me take spanish in 9th grade when i HAVE to take it in 10th. this is so stupid. My mom is a smartass who says i have to take in 9th becuase she wants to me learn it and im lazy for not lerarnig it at home by myself. I told my parents i want to learn japanese but NO, that not acceptable becuase i wont use it. Am i right to just fail the class? What can i do, i CANT be reasonable with them becuase they think im ALWAYS wrong and think that there ALWAYS right. I get that its easy but i dont want to waste my last year of junoir high doing spanish and then having to take it again in 10th. I have a 4.0 in core classes im not worried about it dropping my gpa cause it doest count.

A. No, just listen to your parents. Japanese is VERY difficult, and most likely, you won't have any use for it. Also, spanish is one of the easier languages. I started taking it in 6th grade (im in the IB program) and I've had straight A's. So if you just want to go ahead in life, start taking Spanish class in 9th grade, because it looks good on a college application. Note: this is coming from an 8th GRADER!

How hard are the Spanish classes in a Spanish minor compared to fourth-year highschool Spanish?
Q. I'm planning on doing a Spanish minor when I start college next year. I'm in my four year of Spanish right now in highschool, it's Spanish 4. I was wondering if it gets much harder for a minor in college? Thanks.
Asked by - - Tue Nov 10 23:04:48 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If your school offers AP spanish I suggest you take it so you can get out of the easy courses in college, becuase believe it or not there are courses in college that is similar to begginers level in high school. I took four years of Spanish in high school and minoring in it. I would suggest practicing your listing and speaking becuase the upper levels the proffesors will speak complete Spanish and they do not want you speaking English. Hope this helps :)

What's the difference between Spanish spoken in Spain & in Mexico?
Q. I want to learn Spanish mainly to talk to Mexican people.I was thinking of using Rosetta Stone (which brings me to another question - is Rosetta Stone reliable?) but they only offer Spanish (Spain) & Spanish (Latin America) (question #3 which is closer to Mexican Spanish Latin America, or Spain's spanish?).But the point is, would either of those be efficient for talking to Mexicans? And if so how much?

A. Spaniards sound as though they have a speech defect, a lisp...thththththth. They say grathias for gracias, Barthelona for Barcelona and Jimeneth for Jimenez. Both people would understand each other...like Americans and British people.

What spanish speaking country should i go to to study abroad in college?
Q. I have researched many spanish speaking countries and have found many colleges I would be interested in but I really don't know what country is best to go to to learn Spanish and be able to go to a really good school. I also want to make sure the degree I earn would be effective once I came back to the states. I really want anyone's opinions on this- preferably if you have personal experience with this. Thank you!

A. Hola, haha umm yeah i've been on exchange three times to spanish speaking countries. I can highly recommend all three. The first time i studied in sevilla, spain. The spanish there is quite quick and they tend to drop the 's' quite a bit. so instead of mas o menos they would say ma o meno well that's how it sounds anyway. But it grows on you. There are plenty of spanish universities which will give you a high calibre degree. After that i studied in Monterrey, Mexico. This was a great experience. i found mexicans more friendly and open than people in seville (although that could have been just because my spanish was better then and i was pretty retarded in spain) and i was able to make lots of mexican friends which was great for learning… [cont.]

How can I get better with spoken spanish and spanish vocabularly?
Q. Note that I don't have much money... Anyhow, I have a decent grip of spanish grammar, and I can communicate with people in written spanish as long as they use simple phrasing, but I have A LOT of trouble talking with and understanding people. I cannot understand anything in a spanish news report, for instance, past fragmented phrases. Are there any good activities or resources for these sorts of things? Any books of common words that you would recommend?

A. Hi, Don t worry about the news. You don't understand anything because the speakers change the place of the accents in the words or the sentences. If the word is too long, there's a tendency to split it and breathe in the middle. I'm talking about the news in Spanish from Spain. And sometimes there's no stop between a sentence and the following and no intonation to indicate it. They do it to grab attention, to avoid making the reading of the message monotonous. I would recommend you to live with a Spanish family some time. There's a lot of possibilities at Complutense University, for example, here in Madrid of courses of Spanish as a foreign language. The accomodation is not expensive at www.aluni.net (where a lot of students from… [cont.]

A. you already have the very best resource right next to you!, your boyfriend. ask him to practice Spanish with you. furthermore i suggest: - Spanish music with lyrics (ask boyfriend for translations) - free Spanish courses online - spanish movies with english subtitles and other way around - maybe 1 or 2 full home study courses. regarding time... really depends on the person. You are in luck having a Spanish speaking boyfriend which can certainly speed up things all the best

A. Ralph Angel just translated Poem of the Deep Song, the first book published by Federico Garcia Lorca and having just finished it, I would recommend it. Angel has a true grasp of the Lorca's intention and language and rhythm. The book itself is Garcia Lorca's homage to the traditional and folk music the region. The book is a bilingual opposite facing translation. So it's a real joy to read both in spanish and english. Here's a poem from the collection: The Guitar The cry of the guitar begins. The wineglasses of dawn are broken. The cry of the guitar begins. It s useless to quiet it. Impossible to quiet it. It cries on monotonously, the way water cries, the way wind cries over a first snowfall. It s useless to quiet it. It cries for the… [cont.]

What motivated the Spanish to colonize in the 16th century?
Q. Was the spanish arrival good or bad for the new world? What advantages and disadvantages did the Spanish have as colonizers?
Asked by Sara - Sun Aug 16 03:22:00 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. They wanted gold and to further their world dominance that they held at that time. Cementing a large number of colonies in the "new world" would give Spain a leg up on the competition, mainly England. And there were absolutely no advantages for the natives because they were wiped out as a result.

A. Fried Plantaines (also known as Tostones or Fried Bananas) are always delicious. You can buy them cheap at the market, peel them, cut them, pound them with a big spoon (so they're flat), season with garlic salt, and fry. They're delicious and popular among many hispanic speaking countries. You can also never go wrong with Yellow Rice & Beans. A typical favorite!

A. Watch Spanish movies online, read websites in Spanish, find Spanish friends online and chat with them, listen to Spanish music, listen to the news in Spanish (most cable channels offer them), and try to immerse yourself completely in the language. It will come to you in time, I'm sure.
