The Treaties of the European Union are a set of international treaties between the Union's member states which sets out the constitutional basis of the European Union (EU). They establish the various EU institutions, their procedures and the EU's objectives. The EU can only act within the powers granted to it through these treaties.

Content

The two principle treaties on which the EU is based are the Treaty on European Union (Maastricht Treaty, effective since 1993) and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (Rome Treaty, effective since 1958). These main treaties (plus their attached protocols and declarations) have been altered by amending treaties at least once a decade since they each came into force, the latest being the Treaty of Lisbon which came into force in 2009. The troubled ratification of that treaty has meant there is little climate for further reform in the next few years beyond accession treaties, which merely allow a new state to join.

What three major events besides WW2 have most shaped the evolution of the European Union?
Q. I have chose 3 events such as the Cold War and creation of NATO, the four treaties that make up the institutions: TEU, Amsterdam, Nice, Constitutional treaty, and the French empty chair crisis along with the Luxembourg compromise. Are there any other major events that helped shaped the evolution of the EU? If so, let me know because I am not sure if I should use the one's that I already have.

A. Clearly, the fall of the Soviet Union would be a huge one. The events of 1989, the reunification of Germany, then the actual dissolution of the USSR in 1991 would probably count as one event. Britain's entry was a big turning point. Another one would be the post WWII period of decolonization, when so many of the former colonial powers of Europe lost their empires and had to focus on relations within their own continent.

A. The introduction of the euro took place principally between 31 December 1998, when the exchange rates between the euro and legacy currencies in the Eurozone became fixed, and early 2002, when euro notes and coins were introduced and the legacy currencies withdrawn. The euro was introduced to world financial markets as an accounting currency in 1999 and launched as physical coins and banknotes on 1 January 2002. It replaced the former European Currency Unit (ECU) at a ratio of 1:1. The currency was introduced in non-physical form (travellers' cheques, electronic transfers, banking, etc.) at midnight on 1 January 1999, when the national currencies of participating countries (the Eurozone) ceased to exist independently in that their… [cont.]

Do you support the European Union and if so why?
Q. I like the original idea, the one which was democratically approved when Britain joined in 1973. Back then it was called the EEC and it was supposed to be a simple trading bloc which helped keep the peace in Europe and also allowed freedom to work and travel. I am not a big fan of the modern EU though (which by the way has never been tested democratically even though it has changed so much from what was originally voted for) and if I thought they had a chance of winning I would vote for UKIP (the UK independence party) in the next election. I'll give you my reasons and then you can make a response and try to convince me that Britain is benefitting from EU membership. Here in a nutshell is what I think of the EU -The organisation is… [cont.]

A. No, I don't support the EU and my reason are pretty much the same as yours, i.e. it's undemocratic, run mostly by the giants, it's a whole bunch of bureaucracy, it costs a lot of money to operate, it does very little for the public, it tries to regulate or dictate every aspect of people's lives to the point that it loses sense and decisions are made in Brussels, by people who don't understand or take into consideration the differences between the member states (what may work in one country doesn't always work in all the other countries). Also, it was supposed to make things simpler by having the same rules and system in each country, but in reality each country interprets the rules their own way, so those "common rules" are not really… [cont.]
