The Deutsche Mark or German mark was the official currency of West Germany (1948-1990) and Germany (1990-2002) until the adoption of the euro in 2002. It was first issued under Allied occupation in 1948 replacing the Reichsmark, and served as the Federal Republic of Germany's official currency from its founding the following year until 1999, when the Mark was replaced by the euro; its coins and banknotes remained in circulation, defined in terms of euros, until the introduction of euro notes and coins in early 2002. The Deutsche Mark ceased to be legal tender immediately upon the introduction of the euro—in contrast to the other Eurozone nations, where the euro and legacy currency circulated side by side for up to 2 months. However, DM coins and banknotes continued to be accepted as valid forms of payment in Germany until 28 February 2002.

The Deutsche Bundesbank has guaranteed that all German marks in cash form may be changed into euros indefinitely, and one may do so at any branch of the Bundesbank in Germany. Banknotes can even be sent to the bank by mail.

On 31 December 1998, the European Central Bank (ECB) fixed the irrevocable exchange rate, effective 1 January 1999, for German marks to euros as DM 1.95583 = €1. One Deutsche Mark was divided into 100 Pfennig.

Anyone interested in a 1000000 mark german old STAMP!?
Q. I have a stamp from the first world war, deutsch reich, on wich written 1000 mark. r u interested in?

A. Yes, i am , even very much, but i do not think i have money enough. Be very careful, your stamp is of very big value, maybe milions of dolars, do not sell it before you get advice of someone who knows better, such a thing would make your family rich for generations, so please be attentive, i know spo many people who foolishly lost a chance like that. Good luck. Even could try some German museum to evaluate and maybe even buy it.

West German 1, 2, and 5 mark coin values 1950s to 80s?
Q. Does anybody know where I can find an on-line catalog with prices on these coins? Either in English or German. I have somewhat more than 100 of them, and can make no sense at all out of the eBay prices. The local coin shops specialize in US coins. Not many dealers in the US do foreign coins, unless they are buying them for silver scrap. These coins are not silver.

A. You will not find a free site. You will have to see if a local library has the Krause/Mishler Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 volume. It gives a so called retail but values are usually way below it. If the coins are not just average circulation strikes to be used in everyday transactions and are Commemorative, then you may fine a collector base here in the states if not they would be a hard sell. Coins of the 1950's to 1980's tend to have high mintage figures and are not old enough to have much value at this time. As for eBay you are not alone on prices. Things sell for more than they are worh and in the end the buyer will lose. It is a good place to try and find values or get an idea on medals and tokes which don't have regular… [cont.]
