How do I eliminate perennial rye grass from my bermuda lawn?
Q. I have noticed this season that both my front and back yards have a significant amount more of perennial rye and looks overwhelm my bermuda lawn. Is there anything that specifically targets perennial rye but will not harm the existing and new growth bermuda in my lawn? (Round Up is non-specific and kills everything/anything it touches)

A. From my past experiences, we found MSMA (MonoSodium acid MethaneArsonate) to be very effective in controlling perrenial ryegrass and other invasive grassy weeds found growing in established bermudagrass lawns. You'll need 2 to 3 applications (7 to 10 days apart) to kill all of the ryegrass...depending on the severity of infestation. It's also best if you can spray when temperatures are somewhat warm; between 80 to 90 degrees Farhenheit. I'd also recommend that you mix in a little surfactant with the MSMA so the spray solution will adhere to the grass and you'll get more solution into the ryegrass. Remember to irrigate your lawn thoroughly the day before you spray to avoid any stress to your lawn. AND irrigate again 2 days after an… [cont.]
