Is it time to ditch the 1c,2c and 5c Euro coins?
Q. I live in Ireland, and my purse if full of this small change, due to the shop keepers fondness for pricing everything at 1.99 etc. I routinely empty my purse out into charity boxes, but soon builds up again. But I was in Italy last week where they have the sense to price stuff at a round 2.00. My purse was no longer weighed down with useless tiny coins, which I thought was great. I gave a local all my Irish 'coppers', he asked for it, like it was a novelty...

A. the 1 c is smaller than the old half penny, and that was scrapped. it's also worth just slightly more than it. We could change the name of the ha'penny bridge to the 1 cent...mmm, then again, doesn't have the same ring to it. Yeah, they are annoying, but they soon add up,

Where to exchange a lot of Euro coins in the States?
Q. I have a lot of Euro coins that I wasn't able to unload before I left Europe. I wasn't worried, as I thought it would be easy to exchange them here, but it's not. Anyone know where I can do this? I can't go to the airport because 1) I would need to get back into the international terminal and 2) I already tried, they don't do coins. So where do I go? Also, I don't plan on going back, so I don't want to save them for a future trip. It is just extra money I have sitting around that I can't use.

Which kind of Euro should I get?
Q. Hi, I and am looking to buy euro coins for a collectors item. I want to know which is more valuable in it's metals, a 1 euro piece or 2 euro piece. In other words, which should I buy.
Asked by Anthony - Sat May 31 09:29:22 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. For collectors of Euro coins the verso is much more important than the face value. The obverse looks identical everywhere in Europe but the verso depends on the issuing country. Coins issued in larger countries, like Germany, France, Spain or Italy, have a pretty low collector's value (hardly differs from the nominal amount) but coins from smaller countries (i.e. countries with a small population) like Finland, Luxembourg or Malta are of a much higher value (regardless of the face value). The most valuable coins are those issued in the Vatican, in Monaco and in San Marino, but they are almost impossible to find, even for us Europeans. obverses: (for the versos of the new members Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus click right) versos:

How can I keep my rose bush dwarf-like?

A. a miniature rose bush is still a rose bush... if it survives till spring, take it outside and plant it if you want it to live a long time... it will not stay small, it will grow three or four ft tall... with lots of miniature roses on it... if you keep it in a pot, you'll eventually lose it... they are, after all, real rose bushes... and they don't belong in a house... unless it's a greenhouse!... but if you're going to try it, then learn all you can about bonsai...

A. It's a 10 baht from Thailand commemorating the silver jubilee of the King's reign. There are two varieties of this coin, one with small inner circle and the other with large circle. Yours is the small circle variety where the bottom of the King's bust touches the circle line. Value is the same for both varieties; $3 in mint state, face value if circulated. Date of the coin is 1996.

A. First of all, just know that you can't just go from normal earring size to 00g. You have to go through a process called tapering. You go to a piercing studio and let them know you want to gauge your ears, and choose your goal size. You then will get your holes stretched with a tapering tool to the next size up from what you have. You can resize the holes every 6-8 weeks, going up in size each time. The ears have to heal in between each size. Continue this process until you reach the gauge you are happy with. It will take time but it is worth it. I also found this link you may find it interesting.

Are shops allowed to refuse coins of 1 or 2 cts?
Q. Today I was shopping at the Action and the cashier refused to accept coins of 1 and 2 cts from the customer before me. She said they weren't allowed to accept them as they could not get rid of these coins. My question is whether this argument is valid since 2 coins of 2 cts and one of 1 still makes 5 cts and these coins are valid currency in the entire Euro zone, even though they aren't minted in Finland and the Netherlands anymore. I know that 200 and 500 bills also won't be accepted, but that's only because cashiers don't have that many chain and if you use them to pay for 180 than it's no problem.
Asked by Frisian - Tue Nov 10 12:06:34 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well actually I think the cashier was wrong because it is by "voluntary agreement" that 1 & 2 cent coins are not used in the Netherlands. However even in Finland where it is law not to use them, they are still legal tender regardless and "However, each euro country will always have to accept the small coins as legal tender. Retailers in the Netherlands and Finland must accept the 1- and 2-cent pieces on the rare occasions that foreigners use them, but shopkeepers won't give the coins as change"

A. I do not believe any of your coins are gold or silver, but they are made of aluminum-bronze, brass, and cupro-nickel metals. Most of them are not very old or rare thus not worth a whole lot, but they might increase in value over time. You have a great start to a world coin collection. US Lincoln "wheat" Cents are worth less than a nickel each 1974 Canadian Cent face value US Indian Head Cents worth less than $4 if you can not read the full LIBERTY on the headband 2009 US WH Harrison Presidential Dollar face value 1955 Mexican 20 Centavos if it matches the coin in the first link AND is pristine (better than the one in the photo) it MIGHT be worth a few bucks. There is another variety worth less. 1984 Mexican 100 Pesos is made of brass… [cont.]

I have a collection of German DMark coins, some going back to before WW II, do they have any value?
Q. These coins are from a collection my wife received from her father after his death. They are in 1, 2, 5 and 10 DMark values. Many are dated before World War II. I don't know the exact way to grade a coin but these appear to be mostly unused or maybe uncirrculated. Some are in commerative packaging. All were legal tender in Germany at one time or the other before the Euro. We are wondering if they still have any value above there legal tender face value. As a matter of fact we are not sure if they even have a value as legal tender anymore. At one time you could trade all DMarks in for Euros, but I don't know if you can even do that anymore.

A. They are not legal tender any more. The coins during the war have not been legal tender since the end of the war. Germany had a monetary change in 1948 and then again when the Euro showed up. They are worth more as a collectors item anyway. Since they are large denominations they do have a collector base, especially in Germany but also here in the states. There are always collectors of commemorative coins, as well as WW II coin collectors. Without seeing them or having a list of dates, mint marks and denomination of each I can't help you more than this. If you have the packaging then those must be uncirculated coins or proofs. If they were a collection then the other coins are probably of a high circulated grades. German's are usually… [cont.]

What does it mean if you find coins in your dream?
Q. they were coins of 1 and 2 euros

A. Coins represent value and currency, which means you have seen some aspect of yourself that brings more value to yourself or more means to get the things you want. These are not large sums of money but maybe you recently started something small and it's working out well, so it's a good dream.
