The euro (€) is the official currency of the European Union, and is currently in use in 16 of the 27 Member States. The states, known collectively as the Eurozone, are Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovak republic, Slovenia and Spain. The currency is also used in a further five European countries, with and without formal agreements, and is consequently used daily by some 327 million Europeans. Over 175 million people worldwide use currencies which are pegged to the euro, including more than 150 million people in Africa.

The euro is the second largest reserve currency and the second most traded currency in the world after the U.S. dollar. As of October 2009, with more than €790 billion in circulation, the euro is the currency with the highest combined value of banknotes and coins in circulation in the world, having surpassed the U.S. dollar. Based on IMF estimates of 2008 GDP and purchasing power parity among the various currencies, the Eurozone is the second largest economy in the world.

The name euro was officially adopted on 16 December 1995. The euro was introduced to world financial markets as an accounting currency on 1 January 1999, replacing the former European Currency Unit (ECU) at a ratio of 1:1. Euro coins and banknotes entered circulation on 1 January 2002.

Can Someone Explain Euro Dogs, The European Hot Dog To Me?
Q. I spent several months in Europe and the euro hot dog "EuroDog" became my lunch every other day. I just love them. However, I'm back in the US and I'm craving one. What is the name of that bread roll they use? I haven't seen them in supermarkets here in the US. Where could I get that type of bun/roll. Second Question, what type of mustard do they use? It wasn't spicy and it didn't have a strong mustered taste. I bought a bunch of different mustered there but I never found the right one. It seemed like every vendor used the same kind. What the secret?

A. If you were in France, could the bread have been a baguette (soft, but crusty on the outside)? And would the mustard be Dijon, which is mild but has a very distinctive taste?

How many French Francs to the Euro when they signed up to the EU currency?
Q. I have been advised one Franc in 1940 was worth 0.3 Euro today. Surely that is too high? The Vichy government paid the Nazi's one million Francs a day towards the cost of the occupation as part of the Armistice agreement signed in June 1940. I am trying to establish the true value in todays market for my new screenplay Triangle. Merry Xmas everyone!

A. From January 1, 1999, the value exchange rate of the French franc against the euro was set at a fixed parity of 1 EUR=6.55957 FRF. Euro coins and notes replaced the franc entirely between January 1 and February 17, 2002.
